VW combi t2 curtains

How I made curtains for our campervan. The the measures, the fabric I used and how I chose the fabric.

Materials :

  • Fabric : I chose a opaque « bleu roi » 100 % polyester, machine wash 40°C (104°F)

I bought 3,40 m (134 in) of fabric 1,50 m (59 in ) width. With these dimensions I was able to sew curtains for the 4 windows on the sides and the back window.

  • Blue thread

  • sewing machine

I decided to make curtains for our VW camper van, the curtains I had were a bit short on the sides and wouldn’t close correctly. Sun light beaming through the gaps would wake us up in the morning.

I looked for opaque fabric and a color matching with the interior fabric

rideaux combi

even though it wasn’t vintage style. I hesitated for a while between UV proof outdoor fabric (this can be quite expensive) and simple opaque fabric. I finnaly chose the simple one.

I bought a fabric 150 cm ( 59 in ) wide so I could make two curtains for one window with out having any fabric left overs. So I can measure the hight of the window, cut the fabric for one window.

Steps:

  1. Draw a line at 65 cm (26 in) from the top you will get a rectangle : 150 cm (59 in) par 65 cm (26 cm). Cut on the line.

2. On the long sides draw a line at 2 cm (1 in) from the edge.

3. Fold the edge on the line and sew along the edge.

4. Draw a line at the middle of this rectangle of fabric, cut in the middle you will have 2 rectangles of 75 cm (29,5 in) large.

5. Sew the seams on the sides as in steps 2 and 3.

6 . Top seam for the curtain rod. :

Draw a line at 9 cm from the top of the fabric. Fold on the line to make the seam. Sew along the edge. Do the same thing on the other side of the curtain. First window finnished !

Here’s how it looks like when with 1 window finnished.

Follow the steps 1 to 6 to make 3 other curtains.

Put the curtains on the rods. I chose to leave the bottom of the curtain loose, however you could make a seam at the bottom if you would like.

I added snaps in the middle of the curtains to close the correctly at night, so no more light beaming in the morning.

Here’s a picture from the inside !

I also made a curtain for the front as you can see in the picture. I’ll give details in a new post.

I’m happy with how it turned out, the fabric is opaque enough, the snaps close, its perfect for sleeping tight :) !!! The inconvenient is that the fabric fades with the sun.
